Gasgrid Finland and Nordion Energi invite hydrogen projects to collaborate on the development of cost-efficient value chains around the Gulf of Bothnia

The planned hydrogen pipeline, the Nordic Hydrogen Route (NHR), will connect future consumers and producers of hydrogen in northern Finland and Sweden. As part of the development of NHR, Nordion Energi and Gasgrid Finland have commissioned Sweco to support the creation of new value chains.

The Nordic Hydrogen Route is a planned hydrogen pipeline along the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia, from Vaasa in Finland to Örnsköldsvik in Sweden, with a branch to Kiruna. The planned pipeline is an important part of the EU’s “hydrogen backbone,” which aims to support the transition of industry from fossil-based raw materials and products to fossil-free alternatives, while also increasing security of supply. A key focus in the development of the hydrogen pipeline is to identify and facilitate the development of new, cost-effective value chains for the future regional hydrogen market.

Within the project, Sweco will conduct interviews with future users and producers of hydrogen in order to connect different parts of the value chain and gauge interest in using the future hydrogen transport infrastructure. Participants in the project will be given a platform to identify relevant stakeholders with matching volumes and timelines, as well as gain deeper insight into the development of the Nordic Hydrogen Route and its future tariff structure.

If you are interested in participating in the project, you can email Nordion Energi at anna-karin.jannasch@nordionenergi.se or visit Gasgrid Finland’s website to register your interest here.

Nordic Hydrogen Route is an initiative between Gasgrid and Nordion Energi to accelerate the creation of a hydrogen economy by building up a cross-border hydrogen infrastructure in Bothnian Bay region and an open hydrogen market by 2030. The aim of Nordic Hydrogen Route is to drive decarbonization, support regional green industrialization, economic development, and European energy independence. The companies seek to develop a network of pipelines that would effectively transport and store energy from producers to consumers to ensure they have access to an open, reliable, and safe hydrogen market. and safe hydrogen market. The project received EU PCI status on 8 April 2024 and is currently in the feasibility study phase. Find out more: www.nordichydrogenroute.com
