The Nordic Hydrogen Route is an initiative between Gasgrid and Nordion Energi to accelerate the creation of a hydrogen economy by building up cross-border hydrogen infrastructure in Bothnian Bay region and an open hydrogen market early 2030s. The aim of the Nordic Hydrogen Route is to drive decarbonization, support regional green industrialization, economic development, and European energy independence. The companies seek to develop a network of pipelines that would effectively transport and store energy from producers to consumers to ensure they have access to an open, reliable, and safe hydrogen market.

The Nordic Hydrogen Route will be developed by Nordion Energi and Gasgrid Finland, national gas TSOs with long-term experience in gas pipeline infrastructure projects and operation.

Gasgrid is a multi-gas company of the future providing energy transmission system solutions to promote clean transition and an energy-efficient society. We strengthen Finland’s economic growth, security of supply, and energy independence, and support the balancing power required for emission-free electricity production. Through our international infrastructure projects, we are preparing to meet the demand for clean gas energy in Europe as well. Gasgrid Group’s business operations consist of gas operations, LNG terminal operations, hydrogen development, and project execution. More information: gasgrid.fi

Due to experience and expertise, the companies are well placed to collaborate to realize the Nordic Hydrogen Route, from planning to operation. The companies are proactively developing cross-border hydrogen infrastructure, paving the way for new investments in the Bothnian Bay area. The intention to collaborate on this project started in January 2022, following cooperation under the umbrella of the European Hydrogen Backbone (EHB), which is an initiative consisting of 31 European gas infrastructure companies working together to plan pan-European dedicated hydrogen transport infrastructure.
