The feasibility phase of Nordic Hydrogen Route completed

The Nordic Hydrogen Route project has reached an important milestone as its feasibility phase has now been completed. The project focuses on developing a cross-border hydrogen transmission network in the Bothnian Bay region between Finland and Sweden. The feasibility phase confirmed that the project is technically feasible, has strong support among stakeholders, and shows promising market potential.

“Hydrogen will play a key role in the future energy system. Building cross-border hydrogen infrastructure is essential to enable and accelerate this transition. The feasibility study phase has shown that the potential in the region is high, and the project is technically feasible, and we are now ready to move forward to the next stage,” says Sara Kärki, SVP, Hydrogen business at Gasgrid.

Nordic Hydrogen Route has been recognised as a Project of Common Interest (PCI) by the European Commission. In 2025, the project received €29.4 million in co-financing from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF Energy) programme. This support has enabled continued progress in developing the cross-border hydrogen infrastructure.

During the feasibility phase, the project included public consultations, initiated permitting processes, defined an initial pipeline route, updated cost estimates, and further developed the overall business case.

“The infrastructure will play an important role in complementing the energy system and building a hydrogen market in northern Sweden and Finland by gradually connecting supply and demand efficiently. It will also enable new investments, industrial growth, and help advance the regional energy transition by improving access to green and competitive domestic energy,” says Caroline Bertlin, CEO of Nordion Energi H2.

The first sections of the Nordic Hydrogen Route infrastructure are planned to become operational in the early 2030s. The project will now move into its next development phase, with a continued focus on permitting, market engagement, and ensuring technical and regulatory readiness.

The project continues the market dialogue with companies in Finland and Sweden. The stakeholders in the value chains emphasize the importance of cross-border cooperation in promoting concrete projects in the region. Nordic Hydrogen Route will continue the cross-border market dialogue with actors closely in the future. The next larger event will be held on October 8 in Finland.
